Dead garden

I was growing a tomato plant. Actually, I was growing eight tomato plants. I planted ten seeds in a starter pot and eight of them germinated. I was so pleased. I had tomatoes, four of them, perfectly round shiny green tomatoes that were just waiting to turn red and be chopped up for salad. They are now lying on my patio, broken from their stems.

My rosemary also died. I can't keep anything alive.

Did something eat the tomatoes? Or did they just fall off?

They just fell off. I think they got too heavy for their stems.

I feel your pain. I planted the most beautiful garden this spring and have absolutely nothing to show for it now.

Did you have splints set up for the tomatoes? Were the stems tied to a stick standing in the same dirt? I've heard you have to do that because the tomatoes do get too heavy and the stems aren't thick enough to support the weight.

The rosemary might just be dormant for the season - try cutting it WAY back and covering the base with some extra soil or bark. I bet ya it comes back in the spring. What does Jeannie say about it, has she seen it?

I did not have splints for the tomatoes; I didn't think they needed them yet. I'll be sure to try that very early on next year!

Mom hasn't seen the rosemary, but there's really not much to see. It was just a wee sprig in a clay pot of water, which has shriveled up and turned to dust.

Well, it's not your fault. Rosemary likes to be in the ground. And then it gets huge and ugly and you just want to dig it up anyway. -rhg

Hm, I can't wait until I have huge and ugly rosemary. :)
